The Howell Legacy

2010 marks the beginning of the 5th consecutive decade a Howell has been the Head Football Coach at Western High School. Jim Howell, the father, coached the Pioneers from 1979 to 1995, and his son Toby has led the program since 1996. The Howell Legacy will now continue to grow into the 10’s, just has it has throughout the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s. The father-son coaching combination is the only one in the history of California football that has attained such longevity.

Between the two Howell’s and last 31 years of Western Football, the Pioneers have won 12 league championships and made 24 appearances in the CIF playoffs. It is within that time span that the Western Football Program has developed a reputation for being one of the finest and most consistent winners in all of Orange County high school sports. Both Jim and Toby Howell have also coached over 100 career victories, a feat rarely attained by a single coach, and certainly not by two coaches of the same name.

With the start of the 10’s, this new decade welcomes a new challenge for Coach Howell and the Pioneers. After dominating the Orange League for decades, the program now enters the newly transformed Empire League with great excitement and anticipation. As we begin this extraordinary new era, Coach Toby Howell and the entire program eagerly await the opportunity to continue the winning tradition that is Western Football!
