TOBY HOWELL Varsity Head Coach

The Western Football program, led by Head Coach Toby Howell, is one of the finest in all of Orange County. Coach Howell is an alumnus of Western, where he played for his father the legendary Jim Howell. Coach Howell Sr. coached the pioneers from 1979-1995 and Toby has been in charge since 1996. The Howell legacy at Western is now entering its 31st straight year of football excellence.

An equally important emphasis on high academic achievement and community leadership complements the winning attitude displayed throughout the Western Football program. These three key components help continue to keep Western High School Football at the top of the Orange League, the Anaheim Union High School District and …the C.I.F. Southwest Division.

COREY “Bass” MANLIGUIS Varsity Offensive Coordinator/ JV Head Coach/ Middle Linebackers

Corey is in his 16th season as a varsity assistant at Western. During that time, Corey has been a part of 9 Orange League Championship teams, 4 C.I.F. semi-finals and 2 C.I.F. runnerup teams. Corey is a native of Hilo, Hawaii and now lives in Anaheim Hills with his lovely wife Shaleen and daughter Hailey-Kyenn (10) who is a standout volleyball player. In his spare time, his hobbies include beach volleyball, traveling, and hanging out with family and friends as much as possible.

DR.STEPHEN McJILTON Offensive Line/ Linebackers

Dr. McJilton is a native Californian. He has been coaching at Western since 1981. He will be coaching both offensive and defensive line and also acting as athletic trainer. He earned his B.A. degree from Long Beach State and his Doctorate from Palmer University. Stephen is also a science teacher at Western. Stephen has been married to his beautiful wife of 13 years, Maggie, and they are the proud parents of 5-year-old twin girls, Megan and Morgan.

GLENN DEANS JR. Varsity Assistant Running Backs/ Outside Linebackers

Glenn is in his fourth year of coaching football at Western. He attended Western High School in 2000-04. He was a member of the first team all Orange League as a Linebacker. He also helped lead the 2003 Western football team to the C.I.F Championship as a QB/LB. He is currently working in the emergency room. He enjoys giving back to Western whenever time allows. Coach Deans also coaches Western track. In his free time he enjoys spending time with family, playing sports, and traveling. He really loves riding his dirt bike.

BOB BURRIS Quarterbacks/ Defensive Backs

Bob played for Coach Howell’s father, Jim Howell, way back in the early eighties. Burris played football, basketball, baseball and track (81-84). Bob again comes back to Western after coaching Pop Warner, Little League, and both club and travel ball teams over the past 20 plus years. Bob and his high school sweetheart Jodi, also a Western alumni, still reside in the district with their four chil- dren- two daughters, Ferryn and Kaylin and two sons Joe and Bryce.

COY “Franchise” COLLINS Running Backs/ Linebackers

Coy is in his 1st term as a Western assistant. He’s the former M.V.P. of Orange County in 1989. Coy was nicknamed “The Franchise” from the O.C. Register’s “Steve Fryer,” a columnist who stated Coy was “one of the best runners O.C. had ever seen.” In 1988 Coy was named preseason all american as a junior, but was sidelined by a broken ankle 4 games into the season after rushing for over 1,000 yards. Coy was a 3 year, 3 sport letterman at Loara High, earning C.I.F. honors in wrestling and pre-season state rankings in track&field. In 1989 Coy returned to earn great honors such as 1st team all C.I.F, All big (A) team M.V.P,, Empire league M.V.P., 2nd team all state, and O.C.’s player of the year. He also started in the 1990 north and south game.

GEOFF WEINHOLD Varsity Offensive Line/ Defensive Line

Geoff is in his 3rd season of coaching as a Western assistant while being a fellow Western alumni (Class of 1994). He lettered in wrestling and football (under Coaches Jim and Toby Howell). He currently is employed as a software developer in the real estate industry. When not working or coaching football, he enjoys spending his free time with his wife and 2 kids, Isabel and Vincent.

JOSHUA CHRISTENSEN Varsity Defensive Backs

Joshua is in the first year at Western as an Assistant Coach. He graduated from Western in 1994. He was a 3 sport letterman, football, basketball and track. He currently resides in Buena Park and works as a network engineer. In his spare time he enjoys coaching track and spending time with family and friends.

RAMSEY C. FIAPAI Assistant Line Coach

Ramsey C. Fiapai is in his first year as an assistant offensive and defensive linemen coach. He is also a Western Alumnus, that graduated in the year 2002. He lettered in football, basketball and volleyball. After high school he was fortunate enough to attend Cerritos Community College then transferred to San Diego State University where he played on the offensive line. In 2010 he will enter into the U.S. Navy and finish school.

RED CLARK Head Freshman Coach

Red Clark is the most senior member on Western High’s coaching staff. Red has coached various Pioneer sports for the past 25 years. Red began his illustrious coaching career at Western in 1984. This was the beginning of his decade-long position as a wrestling coach. The 2009 season marks Clark’s 20th year at the helm of J.V. and freshman football and his 14th as the head Varsity track coach. Red also teaches science and adapted physical education. Red hails from San Bernandino, where he starred in football and wrestling at Eisenhower High School (79). He continued his education at San Bernandino Valley College (81), Long Beach State (83), Bachelor’s in Physical Education, and Master’s in Education at Grand Canyon University (02). When not coaching and teaching Red resides in Long Beach with his lovely wife of 17 years Darcie, and his four kids, Alexandra 18, Jake 14, Chase 12, and Jenna 2. In his spare time Red likes to work out, run (He has run 24 straight Los Angeles Marathons), surf and play with his chihuahuas Pedro and Lola.

TED HOLT Freshman Assistant Coach Offensive/ Defensive Line

The 2009 season will mark Ted’s 14th year as an Assistant Coach for the Pioneers and as a History/Social Science teacher here at Western High School. Coach Holt attended Tustin High School, earned his BA from UCI and then completed his Teacher Education at Chapman University. When not teaching or coaching, Coach Holt spends his time with his wife and daughter or surfing.

TOM CHO Freshman Assistant Coach Linebackers/ Offensive Linemen

Tom is entering his 8th year as a Freshman Defensive coordinator, Linebackers coach and Offensive line coach. Tom went to Savanna High School and played on the 1993 C.I.F Championship team. He graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1998 and now teaches math at Gilbert. He spends his free time playing golf and playing with his dogs, as well as coaching track and field.

DEAN CHAMBERS Freshman Assistant

Dean is in his second year of coaching high school football and his first year at Western. He graduated in 1996 from Western and played football under the legendary Jim Howell and Red Clark. Dean earned a B.S. from Cal State Fullerton and will be finishing his Special Education teaching credential this fall.

DAVID WILSON Freshmen Running Backs/ Defensive Backs

David is entering his first season coaching at Western. He has coached Pop Warner football for the past six years in the surrounding areas, and is excited to work with some of his former players at the High School level.
